You should be relying on your own domain rather than your vassals as that’s where most of your strength comes from your domains. How are they going to manage your lands if they don’t have the resources to do so? If my liege pulled this, I’d join the independence faction and attempt to assassinate my liege for someone more reasonable. Wouldn’t you if you were a vassal? Sure, you get protection but no other benefit. If theirs nickles and dimes them and takes a good chunk of their levies without any benefits, they’re going to feel resentful. Vassals need a reason to swear fealty under a liege.

In a room full of dangerous strangers what type of friends you want around you? Strong, and you're on good terms with them.Įh mostly disagree. Vassals are both legally and de facto independent rulers, and you have no means of changing that.Ī.k.a. You don't have an overmap that self-refreshes. You don't even have eyes and ears in their lands, and you don't even have a reasonable priced way of getting some. doesn't flow like it does today, not in this part of the world and in this age. See, you're looking at the game through a modern lense, a vassal isn't your employee, he doesn't rule the land for you, people doesn't realize how extremely reliant on infrastructure power projection is, after the fall of rome, going places became a lot harder, and also a lot slower and VERY expensive(same reason cities were abandoned and europe became mostly agrarian)Īs a king, you were not only legally not able to tell vassals to do much, but even if you felt inclined to rule their lands "by proxy" you don't have newspapers, FB, smartphone, or even mail, commerce is done locally mostly.
